Overview
Singapore is a member of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), so Singaporean nationals travelling to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days do not need a visa — they travel under ESTA. For longer stays, work, study, or immigrant purposes, Singaporean nationals apply at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore. The embassy also provides consular services for the large U.S. citizen community in Singapore, which includes many professionals in finance, technology, and services.
Visa Services
Because Singapore is in the VWP, the embassy does not process B-1/B-2 visitor visas for Singaporean nationals. It does process other nonimmigrant categories: F-1 student visas, J-1 exchange visas, work visas (L-1 intracompany transferee, H-1B specialty occupation, E-2 treaty investor), and all immigrant visa categories including family and employment-based immigration. Applicants from third countries residing in Singapore may also apply here. Appointments are required via ustraveldocs.com.
Consular Services
The American Citizen Services (ACS) unit serves a substantial U.S. citizen community in Singapore. Services include passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarial acts, and emergency assistance. U.S. citizens in Singapore should register with the STEP program.
Trade & Export Support
The U.S. Commercial Service promotes U.S. exports and business interests across Singapore and the broader Southeast Asian region. Singapore's position as a major trade and financial hub makes it an important platform for U.S. companies entering or expanding in the region.
Investment Opportunities
Singapore is a major source of outbound investment, and the SelectUSA program at the embassy encourages Singaporean companies and investment funds to consider opportunities in the United States. The embassy also supports U.S. firms using Singapore as a regional hub.
Business Support
The embassy's Economic Section supports U.S. businesses operating in Singapore, providing guidance on regulatory developments, market conditions, intellectual property, and digital trade. Singapore is a frequent base for U.S. firms with regional operations across Southeast Asia.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The Public Affairs section manages educational and cultural exchange programs including the Fulbright Program and other initiatives that build connections in business, academia, and public life. American Spaces and English language programs support broader community engagement.
Appointment Information
Visa interviews and ACS appointments must be booked online via ustraveldocs.com. Given the high volume of applicants and expat demand, book well in advance. Embassy address: 27 Napier Road, Singapore 258508. Phone: +65 6476 9100. Website: sg.usembassy.gov.
Special Notes
Singapore nationals eligible for VWP must apply for ESTA (esta.cbp.dhs.gov) before travelling to the U.S. — ESTA is not a visa and does not substitute for a visa if travel purpose falls outside VWP scope (work, study, immigration). Visitors to the embassy are subject to security screening.
