The canton is effectively a city-state: Basel itself, plus the village communes of Riehen — where the Fondation Beyeler sits in a Renzo Piano pavilion beside a pond — and Bettingen at the German border. Two half-cantons were created in 1833 when Basel-Landschaft broke away after a rural revolt; Basel-Stadt retained the old city and its institutions. That compact geography means a visitor can cross the entire canton in a single tram ride and still encounter world-class art, Romanesque architecture, riverside leisure, and a glimpse of two neighbouring countries within walking distance of the central train station.

  • •EuroAirport is physically located in France; Swiss customs apply only on the Swiss-side access road, and passengers clear immigration at the Basel terminal side.
