Overview
The New Zealand Embassy in Beijing is the senior post in New Zealand's Asian diplomatic network and a strategically central mission. China is one of New Zealand's most important trade partners — particularly in dairy, meat, forestry and education services — and the bilateral relationship is the most operationally complex in the region. The Embassy is supported by New Zealand Consulates-General in Shanghai and Guangzhou, and Hong Kong is covered by a separate New Zealand Consulate-General.
Visa Services
The Embassy does not process visa applications for travel to New Zealand. Visitors from China apply for New Zealand visas and NZeTAs through Immigration New Zealand's online portal and through the global Visa Application Centre network.
Consular Services
The Embassy provides passport, citizenship, notarial and emergency consular services to New Zealand citizens. Consular matters generally run by appointment. The Embassy can also assist New Zealanders affected by emergencies in China — hospitalisation, arrest, loss of documents — and coordinates with Consulates-General in Shanghai and Guangzhou on matters outside Beijing's immediate jurisdiction.
Trade & Export Support
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) operates substantial offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, working closely with the Embassy on trade and investment promotion. Sectors of focus include food and beverage (particularly dairy and meat), education services, tourism, technology, and primary industries.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The Embassy supports New Zealand's cultural and education engagement with China — including substantial international-student flows from China to New Zealand universities and the New Zealand Centre at Peking University, the Confucius Institute network in New Zealand, and ongoing scientific and educational cooperation.
