Overview
The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Vienna is the sole Chinese diplomatic mission in Austria and China's primary interface with the international organisations headquartered in the city — the United Nations Vienna Office (UNOV), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UNIDO, the OSCE and the OPEC Fund for International Development. Austria's economy is small in absolute terms but punches well above its weight in niche industrial sectors relevant to China: AT&S, Europe's largest circuit-board manufacturer, operates major production facilities in Chongqing and Shanghai; voestalpine supplies specialty steel to Chinese rail, automotive and energy clients; and Andritz Hydro has supplied turbines and generators to Chinese hydropower projects including work on the Yangtze system. Austrian ski destinations — Kitzbühel, St. Anton, Ischgl, the Arlberg — have become increasingly popular with Chinese tourists, and Schönbrunn Zoo's giant-panda programme (the pandas were a gift from China) is one of the most visible symbols of Sino-Austrian relations in Vienna.
Visa Services
The embassy directs most visa applicants to the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Vienna for tourism, business, work, study and family-visit visas. The embassy handles diplomatic and official visas directly. Austria has no regular non-stop air service to mainland China; travellers typically connect through Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai or Doha, which can affect visa-timing logistics.
Consular Services
The Consular Section at Neulinggasse 29/1/11, 1030 Vienna, provides passport renewal, document notarisation and legalisation, and emergency assistance for Chinese nationals in Austria. Contact: +43 1 710 36 48, fax: +43 1 710 37 70. Consular hours: Monday and Wednesday 08:30-11:00 and 14:00-16:00. All services by appointment only.
Trade & Export Support
The Economic and Commercial Section promotes bilateral trade and investment. Key sectors include advanced manufacturing (AT&S circuit boards, voestalpine specialty steel), renewable energy and hydropower engineering (Andritz), winter-sports infrastructure (Doppelmayr, the world's largest manufacturer of cable cars and ski lifts, exports extensively to Chinese ski resorts), and environmental technology. Austria signed a Belt and Road cooperation memorandum, and several Austrian firms have leveraged the framework for project access in China.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The China Cultural Centre in Vienna (Wipplingerstraße) and the embassy's cultural office organise exhibitions, film screenings, calligraphy workshops and Lunar New Year celebrations. The Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna offers Mandarin courses and cultural programmes. Schönbrunn Zoo's panda programme — housing giant pandas on loan from China — is one of the most visited attractions in Vienna and a high-profile element of Sino-Austrian cultural diplomacy.
Service Area
The embassy covers all of Austria for consular and diplomatic services. There is no Chinese consulate general in Austria; all visa and consular matters for the entire country are handled through Vienna.
